Update on Bill S-269 & S-268
The CGA has been actively following two private member’s bills in the Canadian Senate – An Act Respecting a National Framework on Advertising for Sports Betting that calls on the Federal government to develop a national framework to regulate advertising for sports betting in Canada and to set national standards for prevention of risk for persons negatively impacted. Introduced in the Senate in June 2023, since then it had a few Senators speak to the Bill. It was referred to the Senate Transport and Communications Committee in mid-May committee for study.
The Committee has scheduled at least four sessions for witnesses. Still, only two sessions were held where just a handful of witnesses provided testimony last week before the Senate deferred all hearings on private members’ bills until the Fall. The CGA has mobilized stakeholders from the sports, and broadcast sectors, the RG community, and provincial agencies to make submissions or appear before committee.
Additionally, S-268, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code and Indian Act – that aims to extend the right for First Nations across Canada to conduct and manage gaming within their own territories was referred to the Senate Legal & Constitutional Affairs committee on May 30th and similarly, hearings won’t begin until later the Fall.
We will continue to update you as the hearings for both S-269 and S-268 get back underway later this year.
